5 Ways to Make the Dog Days of Summer the Best Days of Summer

You have enjoyed the summer. Your family had a great vacation, spent a lot of quality time together, the kids enjoyed summer camp, and you and your wife even had a weekend away. Now it’s time to close out the summer in style. It’s time to make it a summer to remember for your entire family. Here are 5 ways you can make the final dog days of summer the best days of summer.

1. Capture it all

The summer was great, and you probably have plenty of pictures that show this. Gather all the pictures, all the souvenirs, all the reminders of the summer you can find, and put them together for the 2019 _______ (your family name) Family Super Summer to Remember. Well, that name may be a little corny, but you get the picture. Choose whatever name you want and create a book, a time capsule, or even a video of your family’s summer adventures.

2. Hit the state fair

Many state and county fairs take place during the month of August. Spend a day (or two) there and let the kids do as much as they like. Let them enjoy the wonderful fair food they love no matter how sugary or how deep fried it may be. Let loose and let your kids let loose.

3. Do something out of the ordinary

What can you do as a family that you don’t do often or don’t do at all? Sign up for a 5k and walk/run it with your family. Watch a drive-in movie in your driveway with portable DVD players or Netflix on your laptop. Do something silly, do something out of order, do something fun.

4. Do one more thing

There may be something your kids wanted to do that slipped through the cracks. Make this the summer’s last hurrah. Take one more trip to the grandparents, to the pool or beach, stay overnight at a local hotel, or camp out in your back yard. Find one more thing you would all enjoy and go do it.

5. Get back to school ready

Back to school shopping used to be an exciting time for me. Getting new clothes, shoes, pencils, notebooks, etc. is fun. Begin the shift by going with your wife and kids to pick up a few things they’ll need for the upcoming school year. Your challenge during these last few days of summer is to not just get through them, but blast through them and have as much family fun as you possibly can. Doing one or all of above can help you.

“I have really enjoyed the summer with you. Summer will end soon. Let’s make these last days the best days of summer.”
