Our Top 5 Olympic Videos: Derartu Tulu

With Opening Ceremonies just around the corner, we are highlighting one of our top 5 Olympic videos of all time each day this week. We hope they will be an inspiration to you and your family, too. Here’s our number 4 pick.

Derartu Tulu became the first black African woman to win a gold medal in the history of the Olympics during the 1992 Barcelona games. After trailing behind South Africa’s Elena Meyer for most of the10,000 meter race, she dashed forward in the final lap to win first place. Instead of gloating and celebrating the victory by herself, in a moment of international unity, Tulu joined hands with Elena Meyer and they completed their victory lap together.
