Best Life Lessons Learned From a Sports Dad

All three of my kids play youth sports throughout the course of the year. You will find me on the sidelines with a team shirt and whistle as one of the volunteer coaches. I am what you would call a sports dad. For roughly the last 10 years, since our daughter was four, I’ve been coaching my kids and their teammates. My dad did that with my brother and me and I’m glad I am doing the same thing.

Over the years, we’ve created many memories together through youth sports. I’ve been able to be right there with our kids through some of their highs and their lows. I’ve been able to teach them firsthand the fundamentals of the game as well as lessons of teamwork, sportsmanship, and hard work. I’ve been fortunate enough to watch them learn, grow, and develop. But recently, I’ve noticed they are not the only ones learning, growing, and developing. I have experienced the same.

It’s amazing how much I have learned through my time coaching. Here are the best life lessons I’ve learned as a sports dad.

The Experience of Adopting a Child

Tony Dungy was a professional football player, a professional football coach, and now a professional TV analyst. But there is one area in which he might be even more proud of being a pro. That is adoption. Tony and his wife Lauren have adopted six children, and it seems that each time was just as special as the first time.

Below is an excerpt from Tony and Lauren’s new book, Uncommon Marriage. In the excerpt they share their experience of adoption for the second time. Enjoy!

“In the meantime, our family was enjoying Jade. She was really a jewel the perfect baby. She had no health issues and easily fell into a routine. When we put her down for the night she’d go right to sleep and sleep through the night.

Watching Lauren interact with our two youngest was so much fun for me. Because she was a twin herself, Lauren had always wanted to have twins. Jordan and Jade almost became her set. She bought a double stroller and dressed them alike.

People often told us how blessed these children were to be in our family, but we didn’t look at it that way. We felt we were the fortunate ones. God was allowing us to use our gifts and resources in a way that glorified Him. Lauren said it was as if God was allowing us to be a part of His Kingdom building.

One thing was certain: (with five children) we were on our way to having a kingdom right in our own home!”
