Dad Gear: Camera Equipment Under $1,000

Part of being a dad means recording family memories in some way shape or form. To that end, we put together a list of camera gear we recommend.  However, take note that we are slightly biased since we mostly use Canon gear and cannot endorse Nikon because we do not shoot with them.  However, no matter which camera you choose, make sure you purchase a 16GB Class 10 memory card to save your footage.  If there are suggestions that you know of, we’d love to hear your input and feedback.

Canon SX500 – $199.00

This is a great starter camera.  It shoots 16.0 MP stills along with 720 HD video with a 30x Optical Zoom and 24mm wide angle lens.   You can even plug it into your TV through an HDMI port and do a slideshow right on your TV.  This camera would work great for vacations, sporting events, and any back yard shooting.

Nikon AW110 – $274.00

We’ve actually used this super fun Nikon camera.  If you are looking to get more adventerous, you can bring this underwater up to 33 feet.  It shoots 16 MP stills with HD 1080P Video. The lens is the equivalent of a 28-140mm lens  with an aperture of 3.9-4.8.  We used this on a snorkeling trip and it provided excellent pictures underwater.

Canon t4i – 749 18-55 Lens – $749.00

Canon has released a strong line of DSLR cameras over the past few years. If you are looking to get started in the DSLR field, the t4i is the camera to use.  It offers 18.0 MP stills and has the ability to shoot 1080p video.   The great part about DSLRs is that you can interchange any Canon EF lens on the body.  We recommend getting the kit lens and this 50mm lens as well.  You can take great pictures in automatic mode but can get more creative as you begin to learn how to shoot manually.  The quality this camera puts out is tough to beat for the price.
