College Ball

August 26th, 2009

Last Thursday and Friday I had the privilege of visiting two college campuses and speaking to their football teams.  Thursday night I was in Gainesville, Florida to speak to the defending national champion, Florida Gators.  Then, on Friday afternoon I got to speak to the University of Minnesota Gophers team, my alma mater.

My message to both teams was the same-they have to commit to being the best they can be, to work hard and play as a team with the common goal of winning.  I also talked about being a winner off the field, about taking advantage of the opportunity to get a quality education and about their responsibility to be role models for all the young people who watch them.

I was really impressed at both schools by the players and their focus.  You hear a lot about the problems with young people, but I found these guys to be very responsive, attentive and polite.  It’s a reflection of the coaches at both schools-Urban Meyer at Florida, and Tim Brewster at Minnesota-and the way they’re running their programs.  These coaches want to win but they’re also doing a great job of preparing their players for the future and emphasizing discipline, teamwork and education.  I met a lot of quality young men at UF and UMN, and it made me realize that even though we often hear about the players who get into trouble or have problems off the field, there are a great many more who are doing it right and representing their schools in a very positive way.

Great blog!!! We do hear so much of the negative stuff that it makes it hard to focus on the good things. These guys need to prepare themselves to be role models for our kids.

    Dear Coach,

I am very grateful to God for you, your outstanding Christ like character and behavior, your unashamed testimony to draw attention to Him. I too am a Christ follower and am focused on using my organization to help business leaders and professional athletes to sharpen the focus of their purpose, define their core values, and tie real disciplines to each of those core values. I am interested in speaking with you about your work with professional athletes and am therefore throwing out a faith “flyer” with hopes to connect.

    Grace,
    Chip

    Coach,

It is great how you are able to use your celebrity for the greater good. I agree that there are a lot of positive in football and in life, and it is a shame how much attention is paid to the few who have made bad choices in life.

    Take care, Chris

Great points raised here. I am glad to you for that, yet you deserve more thanks than that. I suffer from colour blindness. I principally use Firefox web browser and consider a number of sites are baffling to grasp thanks to a sloppy range of colours used. Nevertheless, here, as the range of colours is beneficial, the design is highly tidy and pleasant to comprehend. I don’t know whether it was a premeditated and conscious attempting, or just the ‘luck of the draw’, but I nonetheless thank you.
