Coming home from a business trip?

Just like the space shuttle, if you re-enter the atmosphere of your home at the wrong angle, you could be in trouble. First, realize that you and your spouse have different expectations. You're looking for relaxation. Your spouse is looking for reinforcements. You can have both if you give the reinforcement first. When you walk in, ignore the mail and phone messages and instead, immediately talk to your wife and offer to help lighten the load she has been carrying alone while you were away. Reinforce, then you can relax.

I too was slow to catch on to this. Even if its just the normal daily routine--my wife needs a breather too; one that doesn't often come when small kids are around. I've learned that if I give her 20 or 30 minutes of my undivided attention and respond to her immediate requests the rest of the night goes much better--for ALL of us.

For a couple of years I was gone from home for two weeks at a time. My wife had developed a routine she was comfortable while I was gone. I would come home and start questioning how things were done or worse criticizing. I finally figured out to just lay low, keep quiet and yes, help out to get her used to having me home.
