Writing Your Own Family Adventure

Here are some suggested story-starters for writing your own family adventure.

For older children:

“Once, on a dark and stormy night, a family was gathered in their home writing a story together, completely unsuspecting of the disasters that were about to occur. All of a sudden they heard a huge crash in the back yard, and ran outside to discover that a giant space ship had landed on their lawn…”

“Once upon a time there was a young boy who had no idea that he would grow up to have the best family in the world…” (tell a story from your childhood, it’ll be interesting to see how your kids finish it!)

“Once upon a time there was a man who had (fill in number of children you have) seemingly normal children, but little did he know they actually all had extraordinary super powers…”

For younger children:

“Long ago, in a land far away, there lived (fill in number of children you have) little elves named (fill in your children’s names). These little elves were all very different from one another – each had their own special talents, which was lucky because they would need each other’s help to face the adventures that were soon to come…”

“Somewhere in the middle of the ocean there is a family of mermaids who live in a beautiful reef of coral and spend their time exploring the sea and playing happily with their fish friends. But one day they have a surprise visitor from the deeper parts of the ocean…”

Instead of writing the story down, you could also create a story together by having each family member take turns telling one sentence of the story at a time– talk about a surprise ending!
