5 Ways to Take Advantage of Daylight Savings Time

Every spring we move the clocks ahead one hour, providing more daylight in the evening. With the sun still shining when we arrive home from work, we have the chance to spend quality time outside. Here are 5 Ways to Take Advantage of Daylight Savings Time. Don’t forget to browse our Top 10 lists.

1. Plant a garden.

One of the reasons for daylight savings was to give farmers more time to work the fields. Why not take that original spirit and plant a backyard garden with the kids? Depending on where you live and your soil, you will have hundreds of options of seeds to choose. Planting and watching a garden grow is very satisfying and educational for both parent and child. Do a little research and then get your hands in the dirt.

2. Neighborhood car wash.

Spring is a wonderful time of year. It is also the time of year that pollen collects on our cars like a yellow plague. Sure we can run through the local carwash easier, but it’s more fun and teaches our children work ethic and skill when we do it in the driveway. If the family is feeling ambitious, have the kids make up some signs and turn it into a neighborhood event.

3. Long walks with your wife.

We focus a lot of our energy on quality time with our children when we can find it. Yet, doing the same with our spouse is of equal importance not only for the relationship, but also for the entire family. Daylight Savings offers the perfect opportunity to head out on a long stroll holding hands with your wife. Walking takes us away from the distractions in our lives, especially if we leave the phones behind at the house. You’ll find yourself laughing, talking, and strengthening the bonds of your marriage.

4. Family sports.

Pitching around the baseball, a quick pick up game of basketball in the driveway, or tossing the football around in the backyard are just a few typical ways we can have fun with our kids. What is often even more fun is when we use a little creativity and make up our own games. It sparks imagination in our children and usually leads to great laughter and healthy competition. Create your own backyard Olympics.

5. Picnic in the park.

Get out of the house and take the whole family down to the neighborhood park. Fire up the grill and start sizzling burgers, hot dogs, chicken, or whatever suits the tastes of your family. Eat, play, laugh, and cherish the simple and sweet moments of life. We don’t give ourselves enough of them.
