7 Ways Every Dad Should Grow Each Year

One of my goals as a father is to make sure my kids grow each year. I’m not talking about physically, but rather areas like intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and in maturity.

Each year, I hope they are more mature at this time than they were last year. In order for me to help them do that, I should be growing as well. All of us dads should strive to get better each year, to be the best dads we can be. Below are 7 ways every dad should grow each year.

1. Listening.

One of my challenges is listening to my wife and kids. My first instinct is to hear a snippet and go into problem-solving mode. Listening fully, intently, and completely is an area in which we should all grow.

2. Patience.

Being more patient will help dads in all areas. We’ll be able to listen better and think before speaking or reacting.

3. Honoring commitments.

When a dad commits to something and his wife or children witness him not doing it, that can be damaging. As dads, we have to become great in honoring our commitments or we compromise our family’s trust.

4. Loving your wife/kids’ mother.

This (marriage) may not apply to everyone. But if you want to have a major impact on your children, loving your wife (or their mother) will do that. Aim to be better at it each year.

5. Teaching.

Both parents, not just Mom, are intended to be our kids’ first teachers. The better we are at teaching life skills, the lessons that guide our lives, like Scriptures, and anything else our kids need to learn, the more likely we are to apply that truth to our own lives.

6. Health and fitness.

As dads, we have to do better with our health. First, it encourages our families to do the same. And second, it helps us be there for them in whatever capacity they need for a long time.

7. Handling finances/resources.

The traditional role of Dad is breadwinner. Whether your household is like that or not, we have to be good stewards of any resources we’ve been given. Having a budget and sticking to it is one of the best financial decisions you can make. (How to Save Money this Christmas)

BONUS: Reading books and Scripture are a great way to learn too. Here are marriage and parenting books we recommend.
