Last Weekend

Last weekend was a busy one. Friday night and Saturday morning I was at the Impact For Living Men’s Conference at Idlewild Baptist Church in Tampa.  This conference was hosted by Scott and Nathan Whitaker (Nathan has co-written three books with me).  The purpose of the conference was to help men reach their potential and realize the impact they can have on their families and their communities. It was great because it not only pointed these things out to guys, but it also gave them practical things to work on for improving their relationships at home and at work.

Saturday afternoon, I flew up to New York to get ready for week four of Sunday Night Football. Before our preparation meetings started, however I was able to make a video-conference call to the West Orange High School football team. Their QB, Reggie Garrett, died on the sidelines during their game two weeks ago, and the team is trying to move forward in the wake of such a tragic loss.  My message to them was that in situations like this you can either push away from each other and from God, or you can draw closer. I believe God wants us to draw closer to Him and find strength in His presence.  It also serves to remind us that the most important thing in life is not winning games or championships, but it’s the relationships that we build along the way that are important.

I urged the West Orange team to move forward and put everything they can into working hard and honoring Reggie with a great season.  I hope they will also remember my favorite verse in the Bible—Matthew 16:26—that says “What would it profit a man to gain the whole world but forfeit his soul?”  I know that’s what Reggie would emphasize to them, if he were still there.
