One of the highlights of our summer vacation has been an RV trip down the west coast of the United States. We rented an RV from the RV Corral in Eugene, Oregon (great people by the way) and headed south for a weekend in the San Francisco Bay area. Our kids enjoy riding, seeing the sights, and just spending time together.
I’ll have to admit, when we first did it two summers ago I was a little intimidated about driving a 30 foot vehicle, but as I’ve done it more, it has gotten a little easier. Riding up high allows you to see a lot more of the sights and being able to have the family spread out and relax while you’re traveling is a big plus.
We actually stayed in the Chabot Campgrounds in the Oakland Hills area. It was a great park that was close to the city but, since it was up in the hills, gave you the feel of being out in the country. We visited family and friends on the east side of the San Francisco Bay and then took a ride over to San Francisco on Saturday night. We ate at a great restaurant called The Stinking Rose, which I highly recommend if you like spicy Italian food.

Spending the time together, eating outside, and being able to hike in the park were great memory-builders for our family. And we saw some beautiful scenery along the way. There is a mountain near the Oregon-California border that is snow covered, even in mid-July. That was definitely exciting for our young Floridians to see.
So if you’re looking to have a fun time with your kids, enjoy the outdoors and live a little on the edge (but not too far), look into renting an RV and taking a get away. But be careful, you might get hooked on it like our family has.
