Thomas, a Play of the Day subscriber, asked Tony Dungy the following questions related to coaching your children on a sports team:

Should a dad coach his children and, if so, what are some tips?

Do we require our kids to practice the sport like we do their homework?

Can we give advice to our children on how to improve, or is that too discouraging?

There’s nothing easy about coaching kids in sports. Especially when your child is on the team. It’s a tough balance between teaching as a coach and encouraging as a parent. But whether or not your children are on the team, here are a few tips from Tony Dungy.

Do Your Kids Have a Texting Addiction?

Does your child even need a cell phone? If you believe so, know that Amanda Lenhart of the Pew Research Center notes the social pressure that teenagers say they feel to respond to text messages quickly, regardless of the time of day or night. A Pew study found that one in three teens sends more than 100 text messages per day. More than 100! Well, as the father, you have the authority to reign in your child’s cell phone texting addiction. One idea might be to have your child charge his cell phone in your bathroom overnight to avoid late night texting. Download and discuss with them the All Pro Dad cell phone contract so everyone knows the rules and the consequences if they are broken.

In a recent interview with Parade, the 36-year-old Latin singer Enrique Iglesias answered why he has not married his longtime girlfriend Anna Kournikova: “I’ve never really thought marriage would make a difference. Maybe it’s because I come from divorced parents, but I don’t think you love someone more because of a piece of paper. And nowadays, it’s not taboo to have kids and not be married. What makes a difference is that you’re a good parent, period.”

The Last Time You Pick Up Your Child

But, soon in the future, they’ll be too big for you to lift. So if you have young children, pick them up often. Hug them. Kiss them. Savor it all. These days will be gone before you know it.
