Encouraging Young People to Read!

Last Thursday, my wife Lauren and I, took part in the first school reading on behalf of the Dungy Family Foundation.  Our organization is launching a reading program to help encourage young people to read more.  We will also donate books and other materials to school libraries and community centers.  The program is kicking off in the four cities where we have worked and lived–Tampa, Indianapolis, Minneapolis-St. Paul and Pittsburgh. Lauren and I are handling Tampa and our relatives are manning the other three cities.

Our first school was Witter Elementary School and we had a great time.  We read our newest children’s book, You Can Be A Friend, and then had a discussion with the students about friendship.  Lauren and I both know the benefits of reading for young people and and we’re aware of the declining graduation rates all across our country.  Our goal is to get more kids in Tampa to have fun with reading. We are very excited about visiting more schools the remainder of the spring.
