If There’s One Thing Dads Need to Do More, It’s This

I was recently asked the question, “What is one thing I wished dads would do more of today?” The question immediately made me think of my father and so many of the things he did well. However, there is one thing that stood out more than any other. And it’s something, I have to admit, that I have struggled with as a dad. So if there was one thing I wished dads would do more today, it would definitely be the following.

Find a Way to Spend More Quality Time With Your Kids

When I was growing up, my father was a school teacher. He was around all the time. When we were off for the weekends, he was off. When we were off for the summers, he was off. I was always spending quality time with him, and I thought that was normal. Since it was all I knew, I thought every dad spent that kind of time with their kids. When I grew up, I realized that wasn’t the case. My time with my dad really benefited me. Playing ball with him, going fishing, or taking walks are times I cherished. It’s the time spent with our children day-to-day that makes a lasting impact.

I Need to Work On It

As I said, I am just as guilty. Coaching professional football, I didn’t spend nearly as much time with my kids as I would have liked. But I tried to do it as best I could. I took my kids to work with me, and when I was off, I focused my time on doing things that they enjoyed doing. In what ways can you spend more time with your kids? It’s difficult, but it is tremendously meaningful and important for our kids.

Sound off: What do you do to create more time with your kids?
