We all need to take some time to think about what we are giving our kids. What’s the best thing you can give them? I’m asked that an awful lot and recently I’ve changed my mind. In the past, I’ve always wanted to give them my time and my energy. I’ve wanted to give them experiences that I never had and I’ve wanted to provide for them. It’s true that our kids do value our time and want a close relationship with us. All of that is extremely important and is what every child needs.
However, lately, I’ve changed my focus on what I think is the best thing to give my kids. This is what it is.
A Relationship With God
For me, this is one of the most important things I’m trying to give my kids. This is what I focused on for a number of years. I worked on telling my kids that being a Christian and having a relationship with Christ is the greatest goal.
Teaching Them How to Follow God
One of the last things Jesus said in the book of Matthew is to make disciples of people. A disciple is a student or follower of someone. So I’ve been working on teaching my kids to follow Christ—not just to be acquainted with him or to know Christian values, but to follow the Lord. That’s what I think the best thing I can give my kids is and hopefully, it will last for the rest of their lives.
