8 Ways to Make Every Friday a Good Friday

Do you have kids running, talking, and jumping on you when you get home Friday after a long week? Does it seem like there is no rest for the weary? It doesn’t have to be like that. You can make every Friday a good Friday. Here are 8 things to help close your Friday and start your family weekend off great.

1. Take a few minutes for yourself when you first get home. Sit in the car before coming in and flush out your day and your week. Get your mind free and clear for your family.

2. Dock your cell phone when you walk in the door. The great connector and the great distractor–the cell phone. Dock your phone immediately so it doesn’t get between you and your family.

3. Put your work bag and laptop in your office or bedroom. Your work bag is a symbol (reminder) of work and your laptop lurks inside. You can easily open it up and lose an hour or two doing work or even surfing the web. Leave it there until Sunday evening.

4. Don’t pick up the TV remote. Your kids miss you. Don’t let the TV steal their time with you. Leave the remote where it is and turn your attention to your kids.

5. Spend a few minutes just listening. If you did step #1, you should have lowered the need to talk about all that went on at work for the day and week. But your kids (and wife if you are married) need to share their day with you. Spend time just listening to your wife and your kids. Then, if needed, share your day after they finish.

6. Do something active with your kids first. Sometimes our first tendency is to sit down and relax when we get home, but your kids aren’t going to be satisfied until they have your full attention. So do something to get your energy up. Wrestle with the kids if you can’t get outside. If you can be outside, go for a family walk, bike ride, or play ball in the yard.

7. Make the most of whatever they want to do. No matter what you do with them, make the most of it. It is valuable time to be cherished. Monday will be here soon enough.

8. Get some rest at night. You do need to rest. Don’t make Friday night, even after the kids go to bed, your night to flip channels until 2am. When it’s time to shut it down, shut it down. That will leave you refreshed and ready for a full day of family fun on Saturday.
