Nurturing Your Children’s Growth in K4-1st Grade

It feels like just yesterday you were changing diapers and your little one was graduating to those 3T pajamas. Time flies, but buckle up! Your child is about to shoot up faster than ever. Kids aged 4 – 6 years old are growing rapidly and learning new skills each day. They are physically maturing right in front of your eyes. They are “big kids” now. Don’t believe it? Just ask them. They are ready to prove to you what they can do.

Physical maturity is one of the clearest signs of growth. It’s easier to see than mental or emotional development. Kids this age can do a lot. They can run, jump, skip, climb, and even swim with supervision. They should be able to balance on one foot, hop, and ride a bike. They are constantly moving, and you play a role in their physical development. Get active with them by playing games like leapfrog, jumping rope, or throwing water balloons. These teach kids useful skills.

Physical activity is great for growing bones and muscles, but even if kids are getting tons of exercise, their overall health could be negatively impacted by poor decisions at mealtime. Kids’ bodies are machines that perform best with the best fuel. Left to make their own choices, most kids will choose to snack on sodas and chips over apples and zucchini. It’s our job to teach good food habits, like eating a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. It’s estimated one in five kids suffer from obesity-related health problems.

Dads play a huge role in building strong kids. Get them away from computer screens and up and moving. Go hiking, ride bikes together, and run in the park. Try tossing the baseball or kicking the soccer ball! They aren’t babies anymore and they won’t be this size for long, either. Soak up every moment. Huddle up with your kids and ask, “What is something you love to eat?”
